To Wix Or Not To Wix

Posted on 09 May 2018 by Pixelfeast

Ask any developer about Wix and you will see a familiar pattern. The developers' lip will turn down, a worried look will cross their face and they might even raise their voice or appear angry. Let's get down to the nuts and bolts of why that could be the case and what's really behind that worried expression.

Pros of using Wix

  • It has a wide range of templates built specifically for the program that you can update with your logo, imagery and content.
  • You can set up as many pages as you want.
  • eCommerce features that let you run your store online.
  • You don't have to pay a designer/developer to produce a website for you.

Cons of using Wix

  • There is a lot of hidden costs. Want to use your own domain, pay. Want to add a contact form, pay. Want to turn on the selling aspects of the eCommerce, yep you guest it. While it doesn't cost much initially, the more you bolt on, the more expensive it becomes.
  • It is a terrible platform for Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). Essentially, Wix outputs the code in a format that SEO readers (like Google, Yahoo, etc) can't read. Sure there is a spot for a title tag and meta description, but there is a lot more that is needed on the page for effective SEO. There is also a few places that SEO people need to use on the website to put tags and codes, which Wix doesn't provide ways of doing.
  • Have you tried using the website building interface? Sure, you can do it and What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG), but how long has it taken you? If you build something from scratch, it could take hours, even days. Couldn't you be spending your time on making money or improving your business?

Solutions Instead of Wix

While Wix may seem like a good idea at the time, in the long run, it's going to cost you in wasted time and money. Have you heard of the expression "you pay cheap, you pay twice?" That's Wix.

So what can you do differently? A lot of agencies are providing websites with online marketing packages included to get your website generating a lot of traffic and conversions quickly. As they are all packaged up, this means they can provide you with a fantastic solution at a fraction of the cost. One such example is Bang Digital's "Rockit" Websites

Of course, Pixelfeast also provide websites, but without the SEO. That means we could make the website for you and then you can discuss an online marketing package with an agency that does provide online marketing. A new website that SEO engines can read may be all that you need at the end of the day anyway.

In Conclusion

So that's why your web designer/developer friend gets anxious when you mention Wix. Web people have your best interests at heart and want to help you succeed in their web world. You may find that Wix is exactly what you need and that's fine, but a web person knows how difficult the program can be. If you feel like you are getting no where with Wix, it might be time to consider the alternatives...
